Math Night

math.jpgWhile I know it is a long drive, Family Math Night is happening on Thursday at the meeting center in Murrieta. From what I understand, numerous EF’s will be presenting games and presentations to make your math program richer and more exciting. Families with children in grades K-6 are invited to attend and join in the fun at 6:30 on November 16th.

Early Math Games

A mother wrote and wanted an online place for her K student to practice math. I found three very good sites that are multi-leveled so you can “graduate” your child as they become more skilled. While I don’t think these are a replacement for the math programs you are already doing, they might be a fun review of skills that would be preferable to the “drill and kill” typical in some texts. Here they are: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/numbertime;www.fungame.com;www.learningplanet.com. Let me know how these work for you. The bbc site also has a number of other interesting connections to other subject areas.

Teaching Math with Favorite Picture Books

teachingmath.jpgThis is a great supplemental for our earliest math learners. The author takes familiar picture books and gives suggestions for connecting them to interesting, hands-on math awareness activities. While this Scholastic book sites grades 1-3, most of it is more appropriate to very early learners. It is available in the Anaheim library system.
